Ophthalmosaurus Femur Jurassic UK


Ophthalmosaurus icenicus. This is from a large sized ichthyosaur indeed. The complete femur is quite lovely despite repair from a single break and slight crushing during fossilization. Limb bones from this speies are particularly rare to find. There is some residual matrix still attached but it has good detail and measures 75mm or 3 inches in length. Note that the rear paddles of this species are very much reduced in size compared to the front paddles.
